Important Measure K Update

On April 27, 2015 the Governing Board took a courageous step forward and approved $15,763,850 for the second phase of Measure K funding.  This was not a decision easily reached.  The essential question was, “Given the reality of limited funding (and the age of JME, LJE and JSE) how do we prioritize facilities projects in a way that supports our highest vision for 21st century teaching and learning programs, while also addressing safety and maintenance concerns district-wide?”  The board carefully evaluated the many options before them and approved a Hybrid Project List that aligns to the recommendations of architects Hibser –Yamauchi.  While there are far more projects than funding allows, the goal was to leverage the funds in a way that best supports the educational, health and safety needs of students and staff.

Highlights of the approved project list include:

  • District-wide replacement of classroom furniture
  • Domestic water system, boiler replacement, fencing and reconfigured playfield – John Muir
  • HVAC including insulation, roofing and energy management system, bathroom renovation and fencing – John Swett
  • HVAC including insulation, energy management system, fencing and field renovation – Las Juntas
  • Boilers, fencing and xeriscaping – Morello Park
  • Setting up an additional Science lab, classroom upgrades, CTE renovation (building F) and auditorium sound system upgrade, stage lighting and projection screen – MJHS
  • Building J renovation to support STEM and CTE related programs, new classroom building with 6 classrooms and other flexible spaces, D wing renovation to support CTE programs and F and H  modernization – AHS

Students in grades 1-5, at all four elementary schools in the Martinez Unified School District, actively engage in the California requirement of 200 minutes of Physical Education every 10 days.  In order to assure compliance with this legal requirement, each site has established “Prep C” protocols for those grade levels that may not reach the 200 minute requirements due to minimum days, teacher prep, and / or assemblies.  These established practices of running laps, dance & movement, and cardio-conditioning outside of the PE class are documented and verified by the site administration on a monthly basis.

Fact Sheets on Ebola

It is important to know that there are no reported cases of Ebola in Contra Costa County, or anywhere in California, and the risk is very low. But there are plans in place to contain the disease and protect the public in the unlikely event of a local case.  Here is a letter from Contra Costa Health Services Department and a fact sheet in English and a fact sheet in Spanish.
